Sneaky here with another pawsome interview of a pet character. Today, it’s my pleasure to chat with a cozy mystery cat whose current book, Magickal Mystery Lore is on tour with Escape with Dollycas Into a Good Book. Hello, there, Kitty. What is your name and your author’s name?
My name is Isenbale, a perfect and dignified name for a Maine Coon familiar, thanks to my author, Sharon Pape.
Mice to meet you, Isenbale. That is quite a distinctive name.
What book(s) have you appeared in? Please list them and their genre.
I have been in each of the Abracadabra books thus far, including the one that debuted on April sixteenth. I’m pleased to say that these are all cozy mysteries: Magick & Mayhem, That Olde White Magick, Magick Run Amok, and Magickal Mystery Lore.
Pawsome. I’m a cozy mystery cat myself.
Are you in a series? If so, please give information about it.
As you have no doubt surmised, these books are part of a series known as The Abracadabra Mysteries. Kailyn Wilde is a sorceress of ancient lineage, whose family emigrated to America in the seventeenth century. Over the years, a quaint, touristy town sprang up around their magick shop in Upstate New York. The shop is known for its health and beauty aids that work like magick. In the past year, Kailyn has discovered she also has a knack for solving murder cases. When she enlists the help of her cat familiar, Sashkatu (who isn’t half the cat I am), her psychic aunt Tilly, boyfriend/ journalist, Travis, and Merlin – yes that Merlin, the bad guys don’t stand a chance. Although I haven’t had a role in Kailyn’s crime fighting, I play an important cameo role in the Wilde family as Tilly’s loyal familiar.
Wow, Meow. That sounds great.
Are you based on a real animal such as your author’s? If so, please give further details.
I am not based on any other cat. I am unique and born of the stuff of dreams.
I see. What fun.
What do you like most about your role in your author’s books?
I love being Tilly’s familiar for several reasons. I’m one degree removed from the central action and dangers of Kailyn’s life. My Tilly is a master pastry chef. There are always goodies around and the magnificent smells of more things baking. What’s more, ever since Merlin crash landed in the magick shop, he’s been living here in Tilly’s house with me. Merlin is to cats as Elvis and the Beatles were to teeny boppers. Like all felines, I simply can’t get enough of him, despite the incident when he accidentally turned me into a bird and forgot how to change me back!
Did someone say “bird?” You’re making me hungry with all that talk of bakery goodies and then you have to mention a bird – MOL (meow out loud).
Are you a talking cat in your books or just a silent one like I am who just meows occasionally?
I am like you, Sneaky, I keep my thoughts to myself, except for the occasional and perfectly timed meow.
That’s the best way to be.
What advice would you give other cat characters?
Be observant and always have a hidey hole close by in case danger comes calling, whether it be a cranky child or a killer. If a lap is available, make use of it. If a sunny ledge is also an option, remember that the lap belongs to someone with opposable thumbs who can cook or order takeout. And don’t let anyone turn you into anything else. As a cat, you are already at the top of the animal kingdom!
Do you have any new books coming out? Please give dates and details.
As a matter of fact, I do. Magickal Mystery Lore came out April 16th and we had a wonderful Facebook Release Party on that date with six fabulous cozy authors, including your author, Sneaky! There were giveaways and lots of fun!
I heard about that. I love Facebook parties and have hosted a few myself.
Well, Isenbale, it’s been a pleasure having you here. Best whiskers to you and your author on your new mystery. I’m sharing the blog tour below.

This spells trouble . . .
The New Camel Day Fair is a fun-filled event for residents of this upstate New York town. Kailyn Wilde, a modern-day witch of ancient lineage, leaves her potion shop, Abracadabra—and her feline familiar, Sashkatu—to attend with her fortune-telling Aunt Tilly. Joining them is legendary wizard Merlin, who’s discovering new pleasures of time-traveling to the modern world, including curly fries and kettle corn—but the appeal of the Tilt-a-Wheel is beyond his mystical imagination.
The real wild ride begins later, when neighboring sweet shop owner Lolly rushes into Abracadabra with news about a dead body. The victim has one of Lolly’s fudge knives stuck in her back, but in spite of the sticky evidence, Lolly is only one of several suspects with ample motive and opportunity. Meanwhile, Merlin’s research into old family scrolls and electromagnetic ley lines is causing some unusual mix-ups. As the two investigations collide, Kailyn will have to do everything in her power to prevent disaster…
About the Author
Sharon Pape describes her writing career as having two stages. Back in the dark ages, before computers were in every household, she had three paranormal books published. The first one was condensed by Redbook Magazine, the first paperback original they had ever condensed. Around the same time, Redbook published her first short story.
Then life brought her an unexpected challenge that went by the name of breast cancer. When her treatment was over, she became a volunteer for the American Cancer Society’s Reach to Recovery Program and went on to be the program’s coordinator for Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island. Several years later, with the help of her surgical oncologist and two other survivors, she started her own not-for-profit organization to provide information and peer support to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.
Once the organization was running smoothly and didn’t require as much of her time, she returned to her first love – writing. During this second stage of her career, she’s been writing cozy mysteries with a paranormal twist and a splash of humor.
