Interview with Matilda, the Dog, from Peachy Scream: A Georgia B&B Cozy Mystery by Anna Gerard

Meow, Mr. Dog. I’m Sneaky. Welcome to my blog. Please introduce yourself and your author.

WOOF! My name is Matilda, aka Mattie the Australian Shepherd. My author is Anna Gerard (who is also Diane A.S. Stuckart and Ali Brandon)

Nice to meet you. What book(s) have you appeared in? Please list them and their genre.

I am the star of the Georgia B&B cozy mystery series from Crooked Lane Books. My first book was PEACH CLOBBERED and the new book is PEACHY SCREAM. I am on the cover of both (well, not exactly me…the artist mixed me up with a border collie, as several clever readers have noticed).

At least you get to be on the covers. I’ve only been on one cover of my author’s Cobble Cove cozy mystery series, and it was another Siamese cat who didn’t look as handsome as me in my feline opinion.

Please tell us about your series.

My story human, Nina Fleet, has turned our Queen Anne home in Cymbeline Georgia into something she calls a Bed and Breakfast. All I know is that strange people come to stay with us for a few days. Some of them are very nice, and some are not (the nice ones sneak me bits of their breakfast). But I’m not so sure a B&B is a good idea. Ever since Nina opened the place, people she knows have been murdered! And of course I have to use my superior canine intellect to help her and the sheriff figure out the killer.

Sounds interesting. There’s an inn in my series, too, and the upcoming book will feature it more prominently, but I’m a library cat so most of the series has taken place around the town’s library so far.

Are you based on a real animal such as your author’s? If so, please give further details.

In name and looks, I am based on my author’s Aussie named Matilda, who she says was one of the smartest dogs she’s ever known. My personality is more like her boy Aussie, Oliver, as he was very friendly. Oh, and he had one blue eye and one brown eye like me. Both of them have already gone to dog heaven, but I am proud to represent them!

Debbie’s Siamese cat, Oliver, who I was loosely based upon is also in cat heaven on Rainbow Bridge for about three years now. I’m honored to still represent him.

Can you share an excerpt from one of your books that features you in an important scene? If so, please include it.

As we waited for a reply, it occurred to me that I didn’t smell any cigarette smoke wafting from that direction. But before I had time to wonder about that, from beyond the row of dividing hedges, Mattie let out a bloodcurdling howl.

“What the–?” Radney exclaimed, leaping from his seat, while Harry and Marvin rose, too. Even Chris looked momentarily startled behind his oversized glasses.

I had jumped, as well, at the unexpected sound. Mattie never barked or howled just to hear herself make noise. When she did, it meant business. As in, a zombie apocalypse in process, or else a wild rabbit loose in the yard. Though more likely, maybe she’d seen Len in the smoking area and—as Marvin had put it—was encouraging him to get a move on.

“Hang on, everyone,” I said. “I’m going to check on Mattie. If Len is still back there, he probably walked up on her and startled her.”

“More likely the poor dog gotta look at his ugly mug and got scared it was Bigfoot,” Marvin retorted, drawing an amused snort from Radney.

Mattie came bounding through the hedge opening just as I circled the fountain. But when the executive didn’t make an appearance, I frowned.

“Wait at the patio,” I told the Aussie, gesturing her in that direction. “I’m going to get Mr. Marsh.”

But rather than trotting back to the porch like a good girl, she whipped about and flew back through the hedge wall again. I followed after her.

The smoking area was about fifty feet away, and it was obviously empty. Not unless Len had decided to take a full lie-down nap on the bench there. But as I started down the steps and across the yard, I heard a sharp bark from the Aussie behind me.

I swung about…and that’s when I saw a pair of long, khaki-covered legs protruding from the hawthorn hedge.

Pawsome. That’s a great scene.

What do you like most about your role in your author’s books?

Most of the time I get to lounge around in the shade and keep an eye on humans…particularly the actor named Harry Westcott, who thinks our house is his. He and Nina don’t always get along, but I kind of like him.

That’s nice for a dog’s life. I didn’t do too much in the first couple of Cobble Cove books, but I’ve begun to play a more active role in solving the mysteries and now readers can now even read my thoughts.

Are you a talking dog in your books or just a silent pet like I am who just meows occasionally?

I speak in Canine only, though I understand Human quite well. Fortunately, Nina is fairly clever, herself, and usually she figures out what I’m telling her.

Alicia also understands some of my feline non-verbal communication.

What advice would you give other dog characters?

Don’t let the human characters hog all the scenes, because they’ll try to do that! And don’t let them forget to walk you and feed you in the story, because readers will notice. But mostly, make sure they put the correct picture of you on the cover, Bark Out Loud!

That’s doggone good advice, even for cat characters, Meow Out Loud!

Do you have any new books coming out? Please give dates and details.

My new book, PEACHY SCREAM, was released on August 11. This time, what they call a Shakespeare Troupe is staying at the B&B because the town is having a big Shakespeare festival. Oh, and Harry is their director, which makes Nina mad because she thinks he pulled what she says is a fast one. I’m the one who finds the dead actor in our hedge, and I help protect someone else that the killer is after.

My readers should definitely be interested in your new release.

To die, or not to die? Georgia B&B proprietor Nina Fleet turns amateur thespian to bring the curtain down on a Shakespearean actor’s killer.

It’s nothing short of inevitable that Cymbeline, GA, hosts an annual Shakespeare festival. But stage-struck Nina Fleet is about to learn that putting on an amateur theatrical production can be murder. Nina’s anticipating showbiz glamour and glitz when a community Shakespearean troupe arrives for a two-week stay at her B&B. But the lights dim when she learns the company’s director is her nemesis, struggling actor Harry Westcott–who still claims to be the rightful heir to Nina’s elegant Queen Anne home.

Meanwhile, the troupe members are not content to leave the drama upon the stage. Accusations of infidelity and financial malfeasance make a shambles of rehearsals. And then, two days into the troupe’s stay, the lead actor is found dead in Nina’s formal Shakespeare garden. Natural causes…or murder most foul?

Nina uncovers evidence that something is indeed rotten in the town of Cymbeline. Too bad Harry is the only one who believes that she’s not going completely off script. And exposing the truth isn’t easy when the remaining troupe members say the show must go on…particularly when all of them seemingly had a motive for wanting their fellow actor to permanently exit stage right. Determined to keep the killer from making a curtain call, Nina and her trusty Australian Shepherd, Matilda, join forces with Harry to sleuth out the murder plot. Will they succeed before someone else shuffles off this mortal coil? Find out in Anna Gerard’s delightful second Georgia B&B mystery.
