Sneaky Interviews Spades the Cat from Burned: Death Plays with Matches: A Paranormal Penny Mystery by Sarah Hualde

Hello, Kitty. Welcome to my blog. What is your name and your author’s name?

My full name is Ace of Spades- but my human calls me Spades for short.

Sarah Hualde writes about me.

Mice to meet you. What book(s) have you appeared in? Please list them and their genre.

I’m featured in the Paranormal Penny Mystery Series.  It’s a cozy mystery series with a semi-paranormal element.  Though I don’t know what’s so cozy about the trouble Penny gets into.

I feel the same way about my Cobble Cove cozy mysteries. Alicia sure gets herself into some non-cozy situations – IMHCO (In my humble cat opinion).

Are you in a series? If so, please give information about it.

In the Paranormal Penny Mystery Series, my human drives us around in her VW Bus. When we settle it’s not long before she sees that cursed bird of hers. Once that happens, she’s running all over the place in a panic. It’s not unusual for me to step in and save the day.

Sounds interesting. My human character is a librarian, and I’m a library cat.

Are you based on a real cat such as your author’s? If so, please give further details.

I’ve been told I’m based on a neighbor’s cat.  Sarah Hualde is sadly allergic to my specific form of feline amazingness.

However, her kiddos grew to love the black cat of their grandmother’s next-door neighbor. (What’s not to love, right?)  Unfortunately, this cat passed away suddenly.  So their mother created me.  I’ll probably live forever.  But you never can tell when Sarah’s writing.

I was based on my author’s Siamese who is now on Rainbow Bridge. She now has two cats, one of them is black like you. Harry will be featured in Book 2 of her new Buttercup Bend cozy mystery series. There’s a Siamese in the first, but it isn’t me.

Can you share an excerpt from one of your books that features you in an important scene? If so, please include it.

Every scene I’m in is important.  But I’ll ask Sarah if there’s anything that won’t produce spoilers.

Scene from Tailed: Book 3 of the Paranormal Penny Mystery Series

My mind flipped through all the pivotal scenes from the most well-known Hitchcock films. Nothing was off the table. From showers to national monuments, everything was a potential threat. How was I supposed to thwart Alfred Hitchcock? My heart pounded.

When Spades launched back into the van, I screeched with terror. Spades arched his back in a defensive strike against whatever he thought was threatening me.

“Poor kitty,” I whispered as I outstretched a shaky hand to stroke him. He shot a stink eye back at me. He hated being called kitty. Before you ask, yes, Spades knew the difference. He sulked.

Great scene. Thanks for sharing.

What do you like most about your role in your authors’ books?

I do what I like.  Sarah has me paling around with Penny but I don’t NEED her.  It could be argued that Penny NEEDS me!

You are quite modest, Spades.

Are you a talking cat in your books or just a silent one like I am who just meows occasionally?

I choose to keep my thoughts to myself. Although I will hiss when ticked off.

I used to be quiet myself and only made cat sounds, but I found a way around that. In the new release of my series, Sneaky’s Supernatural Mystery and Other Cobble Cove Stories, readers can “see” my thoughts as can the other pets in the stories, while the human characters are oblivious.

What advice would you give other cat characters?

Don’t judge your human too harshly.  They have no idea what they’re doing.

Purr-fect advice, my friend.

Do you have any new books coming out? Please give dates and details.

My newest adventure just came out. It’s called Burned. Penny’s friends are good to me but you’ll have to read it to see how they treat her.

That’s quite a teaser. I will put it on my TBP (to be pawed) list. I don’t read too well, but I have picked up some words from living in the Cobble Cove Library.

Are you and/or your author on social media? If so, please list your links.

Social?  Haha!  I’m a drifter.  But here are some places to find Sarah Hualde:

I will share this information and our interview, as well as your author’s blog. Best whiskers to you and Sarah on your new release.

Stalking an old nemesis…

…she discovers a hidden plot.

As a deceptive advisor is snuffed out.

Penny Nicols brings her “gift” to Billington. Searching for her sister, she’s determined to stand her ground. One woman holds the keys to Penny’s link between her past and the present.
When is history better left buried?

When the Raven is the one telling the story.

Dinah, Penny’s old advocate, is struck down before her eyes.

Penny’s long-distance friend T.C. continues to help her trail the whereabouts of her long-lost sibling and solve the mystery. Musical clues and manic relationships crowd the distracted Penny as T.C. supports her from afar.

Spades, the cat, charms the suspects as Penny untangles her omens.

Dinah may be victim number one, but Penny fears the Raven is just warming up.

You’ll love the sixth book in this binge-worthy paranormal mystery series because Penny and her sleuthing sidekicks dig deep to uncover the Raven’s evil plans.

About Sarah Hualde

Sarah lives in California, in a home that brings her happiness and hay fever. She loves God, loves her family, and loves freshly brewed coffee. She has a husband who cooks, a son who stop animates, a daughter who loves animals, a dog that follows her everywhere, and a turtle who scowls at her condescendingly.

Her mother raised her on Mary Higgins Clark, Diane Mott Davidson, and Remington Steele. Her grandmother shared True Crime stories with her as they plotted how to get away with the perfect murder. It’s no surprise that Sarah became an award-winning spinner of suspenseful tales brimming with quirky characters. Mysteries are in her blood. Not that she could survive one of her own stories. She confesses, “I’d be snuffed out by chapter two.”
