Sneaky interviews Nick Charles, the Cat from A Purr Before Dying by T. C. Lotempio

Hey, there, Kitty. Welcome to my blog. What is your name and your author’s name?

My name is Nick Charles, and the human who chronicles the adventures of myself and my human,  Nora, is T. C. Lotempio.

Mice to meet you both.

What book(s) have you appeared in? Please list them and their genre.

To date I have appeared in six books: Meow if It’s Murder, Claws for Alarm, Crime and Catnip, Hiss H for Homicide, Murder Faux Paws, and our most recent adventure, A Purr Before Dying. All are cozy mysteries.

Wow, Meow! We have something in common, as I’ve also appeared in the six books of the Cobble Cove cozy mysteries.

Please give information about your series.

The Nick and Nora Mysteries chronicles the adventures of myself and my human,  Nora Charles. Nora is a former true crime reporter from Chicago who returned to her hometown of Cruz, California, to take over her late mother’s sandwich shop. But in between slicing pastrami and roast beef we always seem to stumble upon a body or two.

That sounds pawsome and delicious. Lucky you. There’s not too much food in the Cobble Cove library for a hungry cat like me, but I do manage to get some scraps from the library staff and Alicia, of course.

Are you based on a real cat such as your author’s? If so, please give further details.

Yes, my character is based upon T.C’s cat Rocco.  Rocco is a feisty tuxedo, much like myself, who even writes his own blog.  He gave Toni, or T.C., the inspiration for the series when he jumped up on her lap while she was watching The Thin Man movie.

How wonderful. I’m based on my author’s Siamese cat, Oliver, who, sadly, passed five years ago. I’m honored to carry on his memory and have to admit I do a great job doing it.

Can you share an excerpt from one of your books that features you in an important scene? If so, please include it.

Excerpt from Nick & Nora 5, Murder Faux Paws:

I felt a soft breeze as the bullet whizzed past me, narrowly missing my cheek. I hit the floor face-first, narrowly missing Nick, who’d arranged himself into full Halloween cat mode—back arched, eyes slitted, lips curled back to reveal sharp fangs that gleamed white in the room’s inky blackness. I reached out and dug my fingers into his ruff, pulling him toward me. He didn’t resist. His back lowered and he curled himself against my side, but the fangs were still bared. We stayed that way for a few minutes, waiting for another shot to ring out, but the only sounds in the room were the rapid thudding of my heart and Nick’s panting. When nothing else happened, I relaxed my hold on the cat. “Hey, Buddy. You okay?” I whispered.

“Merow.”

He sounded almost indignant as he pulled away from me and started inching further into the room. “Nick,” I hissed. “Get back here.”

He paused and turned his head, fixing his golden stare on me. His lips parted and he emitted a loud hiss. Translation: Stupid human, I know what I’m doing. Haven’t I saved your life before? Tail upright, he padded forward, ignoring me. Swell.

I waited a few more minutes, and when no more shots were fired, raised myself cautiously up on one elbow and peered into the blackness. The outline of a desk was visible, near a window that stood half open. I picked myself up and moved slowly toward it, every muscle tensed, ready to drop back down at the slightest movement. I reached the window and glanced quickly out. A fire escape was just outside. Whoever had taken that shot must have used it as a quick escape route. I stepped back and jumped as my ankle brushed against soft fur. “Er-ow,” said Nick.

“Sorry, Nick. Did I step on you?” I glanced down and saw that he had his paw on a rather large object. A flashlight. I leaned over, picked it up and flicked it on. It was pretty dim, but at least there was some light. “Good find, Nick.”

He puffed his chest out and cocked his head at me, the corners of his lips tipped up in a kitty smirk.

Footnote: Murder Faux Paws won the Firebird Award last year for best cozy mystery of 2022

Great excerpt. Concatulations on  your award!

What do you like most about your role in your author’s books?

I enjoy the fact that I give Nora pivotal clues to solving the mysteries through the use of Scrabble tiles!  Also that I have rescued her more times than we both can count!

Nice job!

Are you a talking cat in your books or just a silent one like I am, who just meows occasionally?

Ah, funny thing . . . in the original manuscript I did talk, but the powers that be at my then-publisher didn’t want a talking cat, so henceforth I became silent.  But I think volumes.

Well said. I went the other way. I was quiet except for normal cat sounds in the first four books of my series. Since then, I’ve been able to communicate with the other pets and understood by readers but not the human characters.

What advice would you give other cat characters?

Meow softly and carry a big stick of catnip.

(MOL). Meow Out Loud! I love that.

Do you have any new books coming out? Please give dates and details.

A Purr Before Dying, Nick & Nora #6, came out February 21st.  Nick and Nora #7, Bell, Book and Murder, will be out around October of 2024 (it’s a Halloween-themed mystery).

Ooh, I love Halloween-themed mysteries. I especially enjoyed my role in No Gravestone Unturned where I witnessed a murder in a graveyard on Halloween. I also met Salem, the black cat, who was a guest in that book.

No one’s who they seem in the thrilling new Nick and Nora Mystery, and someone’s playing the part of a clever killer . . .

When a nighttime soap opera comes to town to film an episode, no one’s more excited than Nora Charles, who’s landed the contract for catering the shoot. But if she thought the show’s plotlines were full of drama and intrigue, that’s nothing compared to what she witnesses among the cast and crew, who are sneaking off for secret liaisons one minute and at each other’s throats the next. It’s all a titillating behind-the-scenes look for Nora—until she stumbles across the body of the show’s slain director.

It’s not long before the local authorities finger the brother of Nora’s good friend for the evil deed, and it’s up to Nora and her sidekick Nick to get him off the hook. As she begins to sort out the cast’s romantic entanglements and professional rivalries looking for a motive, she also discovers that the victim was involved in the mysterious death of the show’s previous director.

And then another member of the crew is found murdered, and Nora knows she’ll have to act fast to figure out who’s playing the part of the killer, before she’s cast in the role of the next victim . . .

About T.C. LoTempio

While Toni Lotempio does not commit – or solve – murders in real life, she has no trouble doing it on paper. Her lifelong love of mysteries began early on when she was introduced to her first Nancy Drew mystery at age 10 – The Secret in the Old Attic. She and her cat pen the Nick and Nora mystery series originally from Berkley Prime Crime and now with Beyond the Page Publishing. They also write the Cat Rescue series from Crooked Lane and the Pet Shop series, originally published by Midnight Ink and rebranded last year as “Urban Tails Pet Shop Mysteries.” Book six in the Nick and Nora mysteries, A PURR BEFORE DYING, is released this February from Beyond the Page. There is also a new series, Tiffany Austin Food Blogger, coming out in April.

Sneaky Interviews Butch, the Dog from No Small Murder by Lena Gregory

Welcome, Mr. Big Dog. What is your name and your author’s name?

My name is Butch, and my author is Lena Gregory.

Nice to meet you.

What book(s) have you appeared in? Please list them and their genre.

So far, I appear in the cozy mystery No Small Murder.,  the first book in a new cozy mystery series, Mini-Meadows Mysteries. The series takes place in a community of tiny homes in Central Florida. The fact that I’m a Great Dane makes tiny home living a bit…cramped.

I can imagine. Most cats don’t have the same problem. I fit fine in the Cobble Cove library where I live. Your series sounds interesting. Condogulations on getting a starring role in it.

Are you based on a real dog such as your author’s? If so, please give further details.

I am not based on a real dog, but my author loves Great Danes. We’re sweet, loveable, friendly; What’s not to love?

I wouldn’t know. The only dogs that I’ve met are in my series. Fido is a golden retriever, and Ruby is a Beagle.

Can you share an excerpt from one of your books that features you in an important scene? If so, please include it.

Mildred Aldridge descended the steps to the front lawn, her son hurrying after her. “I’ll tell you exactly what I’m doing; I’m getting rid of all this junk.”

“But, Mom…” he whined as he stumbled along at her side. “We could sell it all and make a small fortune.”

But Mildred wouldn’t be deterred as she strode straight across the lawn without even slowing. “I don’t want a small fortune, I want this stuff gone.”

“But—”

“But nothing. None of this garbage is coming back into that house. My house.” She stopped in the shadow of a large, moss-draped oak then raised her voice to be heard over the crowd of onlookers. “If I could have your attention, please.”

A soft hum rippled through the crowd, then all conversation dropped off.

Emma nudged her way between Chloe and Jade to watch.

“Is anyone interested in purchasing this heap?” She gestured to the caboose home at her back. “Cheap?”

“Sorry, sweetie,” Granny Rose whispered. “I love living with you and all, but it’s kind of cramping my style.”

Huh?

She stepped forward and raised a finger. “I might be interested. How much?”

Seriously?

Mildred spread her hands wide. “Make me an offer.”

Granny did, a ridiculously low one to Emma’s thinking, way less than Broderick had paid for the house.

Phillip, who looked like he might either throw up or pass out if the green pallor he’d taken on was any indication, stood beside his mother and kept a firm grip on her arm.

“I’ll take it. But…” Mildred hurried to the car she and her son had arrived in.

Phillip stumbled along at her side. “Mom, you can’t be serious about this. You could get twice that for the house. Easily.”

“This comes with the house.” Ignoring her son, she swung the back door of the car open and hooked Butch’s leash to his collar as he bounded out of the back seat, then approached Granny and held the leash out to her. “Do we have a deal? You get the house for practically nothing and Butch gets a new home.”

Emma lunged forward and grabbed Granny Rose’s arm. “Granny, I don’t think—”

“You’ve got yourself a deal, lady.” She took the leash from Mildred and reached up to pat Butch’s giant head. “Well, aren’t you a cutie, Butch.”

His head stood just about even with Granny’s shoulders, and he outweighed her by a good fifty pounds or more. When he gave one loud bark, he practically knocked her over. No way could this be a good idea.

“I don’t know about this, Granny Rose.”

“It’ll be fine, dear. You can get back to your boring bachelorette life, and I’ll have some space to do my own thing.”

Not with Butch in the house she wouldn’t.

“Of course, I’m pretty sure I won’t be allowed to move in right away, what with this being a crime scene and all, but I’m sure we can manage until it’s cleared and the paperwork gets done.” She turned toward Emma’s tiny home with Butch in tow. “Come on, Butch, let’s get you settled in.”

Emma stared after her, mouth agape.

Jade nudged her ribs with an elbow in perfect Granny Rose style and lifted her chin in the direction the intriguing stranger had gone. “Look on the bright side. At least now Granny Rose might be too busy with moving and Butch to continue her search for your Mr. Right. Unless, that is, you’ve already got your sights set on Mr. Tall, Dark, and Broody.”

Pawsome. Thanks for sharing.

What do you like most about your role in your authors’ books?

Granny Rose! My new owner is awesome.

She sounds great.

Are you a talking dog in your books or just a silent one like I am who just meows occasionally?

I’m mostly silent, unless someone threatens Granny, then I bark and growl.

Good for you. It’s an important job to protect our protagonists.

What advice would you give other dog characters?

I would probably tell other pet characters to make sure their voices are heard. Heros and heroines are quite chatty, so make sure your author hears from you too.

Excellent advice, Butch.

Do you have any new books coming out? Please give dates and details.

Books two and three in the Mini-Meadows Mystery series, A Matter of Crime and Packing Heat, are both contracted, but my author doesn’t have release dates yet. She also has a new series coming out, the Coffee & Cream Café Mysteries, the first book of which, Murder a la Mode, was just turned in for editing. And she plans to continue with her All-Day Breakfast Café series, the seventh book of which is due to her editor in August, and her Bay Island Psychic series.

Wow, Meow! Your author sure is busy.

Are you and/or your author on social media? If so, please list your links.

You can find my author at:

Thank you so much for having me! I’ve enjoyed visiting.

My pleasure. Best tail wags to you and your author on your new release. I’m sharing your blog tour below.

Sneaky the cat Interviews Duke, the Dog from Carmel Conundrum by Stacy Wilder

Hello, Mr. Big Dog. What is your name and your author’s name?

My name is Duke. I’m a Labrador retriever and Private Investigator Liz Adams’ sidekick. I have the unique ability of being able to detect when people are lying. My author’s name is Stacy Wilder.

Amazing. Please tell us about the books in which you’ve appeared.

So far, I’ve appeared in the cozy mysteries, Charleston Conundrum and Carmel Conundrum. Warning, I get in a lot of trouble in Carmel Conundrum.

Trouble is always good in mysteries.

Are you in a series? If so, please give information about it.

I’m part of the Liz Adams Mystery Series. The books travel to tourist destinations where Liz and I solve the latest case.

I’m jealous. The farthest I travel from the Cobble Cove Library is Alicia and John’s house when the library is closed.

Are you based on a real dog such as your author’s? If so, please give further details.

I’m loosely based on the author’s Labrador, Eve. Although she can’t detect when people are lying, she’s a communicator. I’ve been told that she howls the words “I love you” for her breakfast in the morning.

MOL (Meow Out Loud). What a crazy dog.

Can you share an excerpt from one of your books that features you in an important scene? If so, please include it.

Liz can be stubborn. Here’s a scene where I help Liz and her love interest Brad get together:

Brad had given me a rather chaste kiss goodnight. The hamster wheel in my head whirled around the state of our relationship and what direction it was headed. Duke hopped off the bed and whined at the door. “Really, boy? I just took you out.” He answered with another whine. “OK. I’m coming.” As soon as I opened the door, he headed in the opposite direction, straight down the hall to Brad’s room. He sat in front of his door and barked.

“Duke. No. Hush.” I grabbed his collar and attempted to tug him back down the hall.

Brad opened the door. “What’s up?” He wore pajama bottoms and no top. I couldn’t help but stare at the well-defined muscles in his chest.

“Sorry. I don’t know what his problem is. I thought he needed to go out.” Maneuvering out of his collar, Duke jumped onto Brad’s bed. “Looks like he wants to hang with me.” He grinned.

“Traitor.” I strode toward the bed and slipped his collar back over his neck.

Brad wrapped his arms around me. “Join us? I promise to behave.” He tenderly tucked a stray hair behind my ear. “Please, you scared me today.”

Pawsome excerpt. Thanks for sharing it.

What do you like most about your role in your authors’ books?

I love letting Liz know when people are lying. Oh, and yes, treats. Lots and lots of treats.

Treats are always important to cozy mystery pet characters.

Are you a talking dog in your books or just a silent one like I am who just meows occasionally?

I communicate in dog speak. I yip when someone is lying. I whine when something is up. And of course I howl the words “I love you.”

We cats have much more discreet ways of getting our messages across. Besides the normal feline language of hisses, purrs, meows, etc., I also started communicating with my fellow pet characters and our readers later in the series. It’s a lot of fun.

What advice would you give other dog characters?

You can’t just sit on the cover and look pretty. You need a job to earn your treats.

Cats just have to look cute to earn their treats, but I pride myself on the good job I do helping Alicia. I earn every catnip and kibble I get from her and the library staff.

Do you have any new books coming out? Please give dates and details.

Cayman Conundrum is in the works. Release date will likely be in early 2024. My author beat her self-imposed deadline for her last book by a month, so an earlier release is possible.

I like that. I wish Debbie would write quicker. She’s currently working on her new Buttercup Bend series, but I wait patiently for her next Buttercup Bend book after our short story collection, Book #6: Sneaky’s Supernatural Mystery and Other Cobble Cove Stories.

Are you and/or your author on social media? If so, please list your links.

We are active on Facebook and Instagram. My author also has Tik-Tok, Twitter, and Pintrest accounts that she’s still trying to figure out.

Purrfect. Thanks so much for the interview, Duke. I’m sharing your blog tour below. Best tail wags to you and your author.
