Death stalks the Blue Ridge Mountains as a centuries-old mystery resurfaces and murder mars the lead-up to an annual beagle competition, in a thrilling new tale from Rita Mae Brown and her feline co-author Sneaky Pie Brown.

A massive nor’easter has hit northern Virginia, where Mary Minor “Harry” Harristeen joins groundskeeping efforts at the National Beagle Club at Aldie as the date for its springtime Hounds for Heroes veterans’ benefit approaches. Harry’s fellow volunteers, including her oldest friend, Susan Tucker, comprise a spirited group of hunting enthusiasts, some former service members themselves. But things take a sinister turn when, after a routine tree cleanup along the Club’s hunting trails, retired foreign services officer Jason Holzknect is found dead, throat slit from ear to ear. Soon enough, another murder in their midst jolts the preparations, convincing Harry that the killer is familiar with the Club—and must be close by, masked in plain sight.

The intrigue extends to the grounds of Harry’s beloved local church, where the identity of an eighteenth-century skeleton wearing precious pearls remains a mystery. The anonymous woman’s neck had been snapped, and marks on the grave where her body was secreted indicate that someone recently tried to remove it, leading Harry to question how well she really knows those around her.

As always, Harry’s crime-solving cats Mrs. Murphy and Pewter, and Tee Tucker the Corgi share her determination to sniff out the foes among friends, even those long buried. Harry will need her four-legged companions’ help more than ever: a ghostly beagle only they can see may hold the key to the culprit.

Mew Release Spotlight: A Hiss Before Dying by Rita Mae Brown

Sneaky here with the first book in my Mew Release Spotlight. Today’s feature is Rita Mae Brown’s new mystery, A Hiss Before Dying. If you readers recall, I had a great interview with Sneaky Pie Brown, the cat co-author, who also filled me in on Mrs. Murphy’s role in that wonderful series. If you missed it, here is the interview:

Now for the de-tales about Rita and Sneaky Pie’s new book:

This May, Rita Mae Brown and her feline co-author Sneaky Pie Brown return in their twenty-sixth mystery adventure featuring Mary Minor “Harry” Haristeen, her crime-solving cat Mrs. Murphy, and their animal friends. The gang once again takes on a series of whodunits rooted in the small town of Crozet, Virginia in A HISS BEFORE DYING (Bantam Hardcover; On Sale May 30, 2017). This contemporary mystery explores the issue of wild animal poaching through the lens of a historical narrative—America’s post-revolutionary past.

There’s nothing like a well-told tale, and no one does it better than world-renowned Rubyfruit Jungle author Rita Mae Brown. With more than 7.5 million copies of her books in print, New York Times bestselling author Brown has established herself as a household name. It’s her charm, humor, and knack for crafting a killer thriller that keeps her fans engaged and entertained time after time.

RITA MAE BROWN and SNEAKY PIE BROWN, a tiger cat rescued from the local SPCA, have collaborated on twenty-sixth Mrs. Murphy mysteries, and they are involved in many local events to raise money for animal shelters. Rita Mae also writes the “Sister” Jane Arnold Outfoxed series and the Mags Rogers series and has authored the memoir, Animal Magnetism. She and Sneaky Pie live with many other rescued animals. Rita Mae is now writing, CRAZY LIKE A FOX (On Sale 10/17/17).

Sneaky’s Interview with Sneaky Pie Brown from the Mrs. Murphy Series by Rita Mae Brown

I am very honored today to be speaking with the co-author of the Mrs. Murphy series who also shares my name. It’s my pleasure to introduce Sneaky Pie Brown.

Hello there, Sneaky (I think I hear an echo – MOL – Meow Out Loud). Can you please tell me your relationship to Mrs. Murphy, the main character in the series you write with Rita Mae Brown?
Mrs. Murphy is based on me, Sneaky Pie. I have made her just a bit younger than myself.

What do you (or Mrs. Murphy) like most about your role in the books?
I like figuring things out using my superior senses.
That must be most rewarding. We cats, character and real, are blessed with wonderful senses.
Are you a talking pet in your books or just a silent one who just meows or occasionally?
I talk. The other animals understand. The humans, not so much.
There are a lot of things humans don’t understand IMHCO (In my humble cat opinion).
What advice would you give other pet characters or pet authors?
Just let it rip.
Very inspiring. Thanks so much.

Can you share an excerpt from one of your books that features you in an important scene? If so, please include it.
I am in so many scenes I can’t pick one. For those who are ecclesiastically included, I attend St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. I like my church sermon and my being at the scene of the crime.
That’s pawsome. We have a church in Cobble Cove, but most of our mysteries take place in the library.

Do you have any new books coming out? Please give dates and details.
I have a new book coming out May 30, 2017, The Hiss of Death. It ties together a story from 1786 and today.
Wow, Meow! I love historical mysteries. I can’t wait to get my paws on it. In fact, I’d love to feature it in my new review section on this blog. I’m planning to have it up some time in May.
Are you and/or your author on social media? If so, please list your links.
I personally have no presence. I am too busy keeping rodents from the trash supply in the barn. I am a working farm cat. Random House maintains my website here: http://www.ritamaebrownbooks.com/
I also have a Face and birdy pages here: https://www.facebook.com/SneakyPieBrown/
I’m sure your work on the farm keeps you too occupied for social media, but I I’m glad you included your links, so my readers can keep in touch with you and your author. Thanks again for the purrfect interview, and best whiskers on your new book.
